The Egyptian Cotton Story

7,000 Years of Excellence

Cotton cultivation is routed back seven thousand years, believed to have been used to produce textiles possibly in India and China. However, there is no proof that ancient Egyptians cultivated cotton. Cotton cultivation started in Egypt by mere coincidence when a Frenchman was attracted to a cotton plant and admired the quality of the cotton. He then cultivated some cotton trees and produced three bales of cotton. Unsurprisingly, they sold in France for a high price because of the extra long staple. This incident encouraged Egypt’s ruler at the time, Mohamed Ali Pashá, to import the best cotton seeds and to protect the still-infant industry.

The industry flourished cotton farms multiplied, cotton stocks and brokers evolved. Alexandria Cotton Exchange is the oldest in the world. The Ministry of Agriculture worked on producing fine, strong, cotton with superior quality. It also passed a decree in 1926 prohibiting the mixing of cotton seeds and imposing supervision on cotton seeds.

Egypt is unique for its moderate climate all year round, making it perfect for cotton cultivation. This is the primary reason why Egyptian Cotton is of superior quality and has gained world-wide recognition.
